For Tri-Cities professionals who are exhausted, achy, or foggy—even though your labs came back “normal”

Your labs aren’t lying. But they’re not telling the whole story either.

In one free 15-minute call, Abby De Gouveia, PA-C will walk you through her Root Cause Map, show you the most likely reason you feel this way, and tell you honestly whether functional medicine can help.

You did the responsible thing. You went to the doctor, did the bloodwork, and got the answer that helps nobody: “Everything looks fine.” Except you’re hitting snooze three times, running on coffee by 9am, and aching by 3pm. That’s real. And there is often a findable reason for it.

Why you still feel stuck

Why does your doctor keep saying you’re fine when you know you’re not?

The average primary care visit leaves little room to hear more than your loudest symptom. That model is built to rule out emergencies and match symptoms to treatments—not to spend hours asking why your body is doing this in the first place.

The 10-minute model
  • Hears your loudest symptom
  • Matches symptoms to a prescription
  • “Labs are normal, you’re fine”
  • A brief snapshot
The root cause model
  • Hears your whole story
  • Traces patterns across body systems
  • Uses labs as one part of the picture
  • A 2–3 hour first appointment

The Root Cause Map

How I find the pattern other visits miss

Functional medicine builds on traditional care, then goes a layer deeper. I’m not here to tell you to throw out your medications. I’m here to understand what your body has been trying to tell you—and find the right order of operations for you.

1

I hear your whole story.

Your first appointment is 2–3 hours and begins with one question: “When was the last time you felt really, really good?” From there, I help you trace the timeline—your sleep, stress, gut, family history, work, relationships, and the events that may have started the slide.

2

I map it across seven systems.

I plot your symptoms across interconnected functional systems instead of separating them into isolated specialties. An ache may involve defense, assimilation, and communication at the same time—and seeing those connections is often where the first real clue appears.

3

I start where the most “ink” is.

The system with the strongest concentration of clues becomes our starting point. From there, we build a practical plan that may include food, sleep, movement, targeted supplements, appropriate labs, and medication changes only when they make clinical sense.

The cost of waiting

“Wait and see” is a plan. It’s just not a very good one.

If you have lived with this for years, you may have adapted so gradually that the adapting became invisible: hard work before noon, something to fall asleep, something to wake up, and a bar for “fine” that keeps getting lower.

Your body does not always hold steady while you wait. The sooner you identify a pattern and build a practical plan, the more room you have to change course.

A good-fit practice

This was built for a specific kind of person.
Check if it's you.

I keep my practice intentionally small because I personally complete every intake and follow-up. That means fit matters on both sides—and you won’t be passed from person to person.

This may be for you if…

  • You live within roughly 30 miles of Johnson City and are in Tennessee
  • You have felt off for six months or longer
  • You have tried doctors and still lack answers
  • You are willing to change daily habits
  • You are willing to invest time and money in your own health to feel like yourself again

Probably not for you if…

  • You are outside Tennessee
  • Your symptoms began last week and need immediate evaluation
  • You only want a quick prescription or injection
  • You want a plan but are not ready to follow it
  • Out-of-pocket care is not possible right now

Why I do this work

I didn’t find functional medicine in a textbook. I found it after my own doctor had no real answers for me.

Foundation Functional

I've spent 14 years as a PA, from the ER to urgent care to co-owning Foundation Health Urgent Care in Johnson City.

But fast care never answers the question that matters most:

Why do I still feel this way?

After my second baby, my health fell apart in ways no lab result explained. My doctor told me I'd probably end up with an autoimmune disorder, and there wasn't much to do but wait.

I wasn't willing to sit and get sicker, so I studied functional medicine. There was no miracle treatment. Just the whole picture, and the right changes in the right order.

That's how I care for people now. If you're exhausted, achy, or foggy, I won't dismiss you because one panel looked normal.

“Abby was very thorough in her care and gave detailed instructions. Highly recommend.” — Teresa
“They take their time with you! 10/10 recommend. I wouldn’t go anywhere else.” — Breanna

Six months from now

Picture the version of you who made the call.

It is a Tuesday. Your alarm goes off and you are already awake. One coffee, because you want it. The 3pm wall is not running your day. When your family asks for your attention after dinner, you do not have to calculate what it will cost tomorrow.

You know what territory was driving the problem. You have a map, a plan, and progress you can see.

It starts with one 15-minute call.

Questions before you book

Frequently asked questions

My labs came back normal. What would Abby look for?

Abby reads labs alongside your complete timeline, symptoms, lifestyle, and patterns across functional systems. A single result may be normal while the larger combination still points to a useful starting territory.

Why does Foundation Functional not bill insurance?

Cash-pay care is what makes a 2–3 hour intake and ongoing personalized follow-up possible. All program costs are disclosed before you decide to begin.

Will Abby take away my medications?

No. Abby is a PA, and functional medicine builds on traditional medicine. Medication decisions are made carefully and only when clinically appropriate.

How much time does this take?

The main time commitment is the first 2–3 hour appointment. Follow-ups and habit changes are then built around your actual life, often starting small and progressing steadily.

What if it is not a fit?

Abby will tell you honestly on the free call and suggest a more appropriate direction when possible.
